Volunteering

There’s a saying among hospices that “Volunteers are the heart of hospice.” At Judith Karman, this is certainly true. Our dedicated volunteers are a vital part of our mission to serve the terminally ill in our community. Each volunteer brings his or her own unique style, skills and experiences which increase the scope and improve the quality of services that we are able to provide to our patients.

Direct Patient Care -- As a condition of Medicare certification, a minimum of five percent of our direct patient care must come from volunteers. These volunteers visit patients in their home or nursing home and may be asked to do anything from helping with feeding to playing dominoes or cards. Most often patient care volunteers are needed to provide a break to family caregivers so that they can go shopping, run errands or just do something fun.

Indirect Care – Volunteers help patient families with light housekeeping, running errands or other jobs as appropriate.

Bereavement Support – These specially trained volunteers work under the direction of the Bereavement Coordinator to visit with bereaved families after the loss of their loved ones and provide support, understanding and compassion as they work through their grief.

Office Support – Office volunteers support the efforts of the staff by answering the phone, greeting visitors, typing documents, updating computer databases, filing, copying, mailing and other typical office functions.

Special Events – Throughout the year, Judith Karman Hospice has several annual special events that benefit from extra hands and smiling faces. Volunteers help with the annual lighting of the Tree of Life, the Elks Lodge Barbecue Blazathon and Harleys for Hospice. In addition, volunteers are often needed to help with one-time projects such as bulk mailings, fund raisers, receptions, etc.

Karman Korner Resale Shop – Volunteers entirely staff Stillwater’s premier resale shop, doing everything from sifting and sorting through donations, to pricing items, to manning the cash register. This special group of volunteers enjoys unmatched camaraderie, potluck lunches and just plain fun.
