What Training Do I Need?
All volunteers, no matter where they intend to offer their volunteer services, are required to attend formal core training, held at least twice a year, which explains the history and philosophy of both the hospice movement and of Judith Karman Hospice. In addition, during training, volunteers will explore their own feelings about death and dying, learn from the nursing staff how patients are cared for, and hear from actual current volunteers about the various jobs available.
Beyond core training, in-depth individualized training will be provided for each area of hospice volunteering. Karman Korner volunteers attend an orientation with store staff and office volunteers receive one-on-one instruction with office personnel. For patient care, volunteers will be trained for a total of approximately 18 hours (Core training is included in this total.) which will prepare volunteers for any circumstance they might find in the home, from how to move patients to how to change bed linens without disturbing the patient.

How Do I Start?
The first step in becoming a volunteer is to fill out an application. You may stop by our office and pick up an application, call the office and request that one be mailed to you, or fill out our online application. Once your paperwork is complete, the Volunteer Manager will schedule a time to sit down and visit with you about how you might be interested in helping Judith Karman Hospice, so that you can get started.
