Someone You Love Has Died…
Most of us learn about grief through experiencing the loss of a loved one or a beloved pet and, eventually, are able to accept that death is a final phase of life. This does not mean, however, that we do not feel intense and profound grief when someone we love has died.
Unfortunately, our society offers little support to people who are grieving. Often, after a death, bereaved people feel a sense of emotional abandonment when friends and family go back to the normal routine of daily life, leaving the person to grieve without comfort or validation. This feeling can be especially strong during the first thirteen months following the death. This period of time includes significant holidays, birthdays, wedding anniversaries and the first anniversary of the patient’s death.
The care our families receive from Judith Karman Hospice extends beyond the loss of the patient. We continue to provide emotional support to grieving caregivers with our Bereavement Program established for families and friends of hospice patients. As in every other program that we provide, there is no cost to our clients associated with these services.

Our experience shows us that…

  • Each person’s grief is unique.
  • Grief hurts as much as it can hurt.
  • Resolution of grief takes as long as it takes.
  • In our society, there are very few places where it is “safe” to grieve.

Our purpose is…

  • To validate the right to grieve in your own way.
  • To provide the opportunity for family and friends of former hospice patients to express their feelings of grief.
  • To provide a supportive and safe environment during the work of mourning.
  • To offer hope and encouragement during the period of grief resolution.

Judith Karman Hospice, Inc., has professional staff and trained volunteers who are available to hospice family members who need and want bereavement services. They provide a variety of services which include the following:

Monthly Visits
The hospice bereavement staff and trained volunteers visit our bereaved clients by appointment at least once a month for the first thirteen months following the death of a patient. The purpose of these visits is to offer clients understanding and support as they work through their grief.

Correspondence
The bereavement staff sends personal notes, cards, and newsletters to family members throughout the initial thirteen-months of bereavement follow-up.

Education
One purpose of the bereavement program is to educate people about grief and the grieving process. Information is given during visits, during grief discussion groups, and by guiding our bereaved clients to appropriate reading material.

Community Bereavement Services
There is neither a right nor wrong way to grieve. Each of us must establish our own means of dealing with it. There is, however, a pattern to resolving grief which can be enhanced by the presence of someone who is willing to listen and lend support. As someone who is grieving, it is important that you realize that you are not alone. We care, and we are willing and able to help.

Support Groups
Judith Karman Hospice does not limit bereavement services to just hospice patients and their families. Twice a year, for eight weeks in the fall and eight weeks in the spring, we offer support groups open to anyone in the community who is grieving. These support group sessions, facilitated by professional specialists in bereavement, offer a safe and loving environment for the grieving to share and talk about their losses with others who are experiencing the same feelings.

Workshops
When someone dies, the family is forever changed. Longtime family holiday traditions are also changed, simply because of the absence of the loved one. Each December, Judith Karman Hospice offers a day-long workshop entitled “Coping with the Holidays after the Loss of a Loved One,” that is open to anyone in Stillwater and surrounding areas. This informative workshop offers suggestions for surviving and enjoying the busy holiday season while still acknowledging that someone is missing.

Community Education
Each spring, Judith Karman Hospice hosts the annual Hospice Foundation of America “Living with Grief” video teleconference. These live, two-hour satellite broadcasts provide an unparalleled annual learning event for a wide variety of professionals who work in or in tandem with health care and hospice professionals. Continuing Education Credits are available for social workers, clergy, physicians, nurses, funeral directors, counselors, gerontologists, EMS workers and others.
